History
The story of Coulee Children's Center stretches back to 1954, when a
group of parents held regular meetings to assess and remedy problems for
the school-age children who had special educational needs which were not
being addressed by the public school systems. In 1955, this group
incorporated as the La Crosse Association for Retarded Children.
During the next decade the group expanded to the Medary School on Highway
16 in La Crosse.
In 1968, the group changed their name to La Crosse Area Day Care
Center for the Retarded as their mission had expanded to provide an
educational program for mentally handicapped children. The program
was located in Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church. During 1973/74,
federal and state laws mandated the public school system to provide
educational services to children ages 3 to 21 years who had special
educational needs. In 1974, the La Crosse Area Day Care Center
for the Retarded once again changed its name to the Medary School
and Workshop, Inc. This agency focused on day service
programming for adults with developmental disabilities and on special
education/intervention services for children birth to three years old.
The birth to three program, known as the Infant Stimulation Program,
moved to Stoffel Hall on 15th and King Streets in La Crosse. The Medary
School and Workshop, Inc. ceased its adult program in 1977 in order to
concentrate on its Infant Stimulation Program.
In 1987, the Medary School and Workshop, Inc. formally changed
its name to the Coulee Region Infant Development Center, Inc. (CRIDC).
The agency also began a child care program to include children with
developmental delays. The child care program became known as the
Family Enrichment Child Care Center. In 1989, the agency moved
to 4439 S. Mormon Coulee Road and began providing services for the birth
to three and child care population in a more integrated manner.
In 1992, the agency changed its name to Coulee Children's Center.
In February 1992, the agency added a services coordination program.
The need to expand and upgrade its physical facilities led to Coulee
Children's Center's move to its current location at 2935 East Ave. South
in La Crosse.
After 16 years in existence, Coulee Children's Center proudly continues
to serve the community by providing services and support for children of
all abilities.
